What eventful days those were! Sometimes too much really happens at once. All started with an amazing „test night“ at the new Schwägalp Hotel, at the foot of the Säntis. What an amazing moon this was on a cristall clear night sky. Next day I headed to Zurich airport to meet Nicole Rayner and Lily Gilbert, toegether with my friend Max. Our destinations were the Sustenpass and the Passo del San Gottardo/Gotthardpass. Both mountain passes are placed in the heart of the Swiss Alps, surrounded by high peaks, thundering waterfalls and large icefields. On the first day, we visited a remote side valley with huge cascades. Normally, such a landscape is routine for me. Not this time. 🙂
First, I completely missed the fact that a heavy thunderstorm had crept over the surrounding mountains. A flash of lightning streaked across the suddenly blackened sky, followed by a deafening roar of thunder and a sudden onset of hail. Fortunately, we found shelter under a large rock, surrounded by a sniffy flock of sheep who had the same idea. But well, at least we’ve been safe and dry. After the weather improved, we continued working. I was so lost in thought that I wanted to cross a mountain stream – of course, dead cool – with my camera in one hand, the tripod in the other. I’ve done this hundreds of times. This time, a slippery stone under the water surface got in my way. You can imagine the rest. I saved the technology with my knee – which didn’t do it any good at all. By evening it was swollen, blue and green, and hurt terribly. At least the initial supply of cold mountain stream water AND with a following nice piece of blueberry cake in a nearby mountain hut was quite successful. Next day, we where able to spend time at the Passo San Gottardo with its famous cobbled road – where Nicole has achieved something unique: a colour picture made by me. This is likely to become legendary.
